Colourful show decorates Palace Soestdijk

The great success of previous years was responsible for this year's  third edition of the Lathyrusshow in the greenhouses of Palace Soestdijk in Baarn. The Dutch Lathyrus Society requested the specialist jury of VKC to judge the entries.

The weather conditions of the last few weeks were extreme; large differences in day and night temperature, which could cause bud fall. The warm wether of the last week before the show however made up for the quality and the purity of the flowers was even better than last year. 170 entries were judged, of which the larger part belonged to the so called Spencer Group.

The participants were mostly amateurs, members of the Dutch Lathyrus Society. The Cup for the three longest stems of a cultivar from the Spencer group was just as was the case last year, for A.J. Ruesink from Kudelstaart, who scored best with the cultivar 'Our Collin' with 164 cm.

The growing group of pots was well presented with variation in types: botanical and annual crops. More than one application was shown - in a large bowl or as a climber. Of 17 entries Palace Soestdijk from Baarn  scored best with‘Cupid Pink’:  9.37 points. The plants were nice and stocky, needed no support and were uniformly placed in the bowl. This product has a good commercial potention and thus also scored the Prize of Palace Soestdijk.

Also this year entries from the greenhouse were present. Kwekerij Hoogeveen from Nieuwveen scored with the cultivar 'Creme'because of the good branching, the good division of flowers and buds and the richness of flowering. This gave the score of 9.23 points and the Cup.

Within the latifolius entries the lathyrus 'Pink' by A.M.G.G. Oerlemans-Ligtvoet from Loon op Zand scored best. The pink cultivar had a beautiful colour and very uniform branches. The score of 9.17 points was good for the Cup.

In this category also the NLV Cup was  presented to the participant with an average of two vases (non Spencer Group) with the highest average score. W.C.G. Tolboom from Achterveld entered vases of good quality and gained an average of 8.78 points and gained the cup, just as last year.

The competition (Spencer Group) mixed was characterized with a large colour scala with nice flowers and a bit shorter stems. As was the case last year, participant A.J. Ruesink from Kudelstaart scored best with 9.35 points, which was a high score with respect to the wather conditions.

The AVVN Cup goes to the vase with the highest score of the participant who is an AVVN  member of a society of allotment gardens. M.M. Damen-v.d. Bilt from Utrecht, member of ATV Ons Genot from Utrecht scored best with two entries: Lathyrus 'White Frills' and Aquarius'both scored 9.17 points.

The competition with more than a hundred judged entries was that of the Spencer Group. A good quality with large flowers and mostly sturdy stems was shown. The Carlee Cup was for the entry of 5 cultivars and a vase of mixed Lathyrus, mrs. A.M.G.G. Oerlemans-Ligtvoet from Loon op Zand. She entered six products. The best Lathyrus of the show was 'Sir Jimmy Shand' by Mrs. Oerlemans. The perfect colour combination of the large and uniform white-purple flowers were good for 9.62 points, and also the Dr. J. Stam Cup. The jury was impressed by the beautiful presentation! De prijsvraag met ruim 100 beoordeelde inzendingen was die van de Spencer Groep. Er was sprake van een goede kwaliteit met grote bloemen en veelal stevige stelen.

The Silver Bowl, - De Zilveren Kan - went to the three highest judged Spencer varieties, this year Kwekerij Hoogeveen from Nieuwveen.

The best novelty in the Spencer Group gained the Challenge Cup Westra/Rodichem. Mrs. A.M.G.G. Oerlemans-Ligtvoet from Loon op Zand again won this prize with the new cultivar 'Kierra Madeline'. The cultivar with cream coloured flowers with a pink edge had firm stems, large flowers and uniform. A welcome addition to the assortment which scored 9.50 points and the Challenge Cup.

In the non Spencer Group with the exception of latifolius this year one entry stuck out: the dark red cultivar 'Scarlett' with pure white flowers and uniform branches was  entered by C. Kohlenberg from Nieuwegein and scored 9.10 points and the Cup.
