Predominating potplants at Keukenhof

Especially Kalanchoe and Saintpaulia determine the greater view of the show in the Oranje Nassau Pavillion. However the cutflowers Limonium, Bouvardia and asters are a beautiful addition to this. For the highest scoring entries Keukenhof had offered beautiful prizes. These were divided as follows:

Bouvardia

A small but beautiful presentation with a number of rather new entries. Maatschap Borgijnk from Groessen entered a Diamond Darkpink with a fantastic stem and became second with the score of 9.46 points. The winner became Royal Daphne Fresco by Royal van Zanten. The jury spoke of an entry at perfect ripeness with long full branches and relatively large flowers. A striking quality for which the 1st Prize with 9.48 points and the Award for the Best Bouvardia was presented.

Aster

Esmeralda Farms from Aalsmeer presented the rather new Aster 'Nigaraque', a pink cultivar with a great number of buds, which scored 9.24 points. The overall quality was at a good level for all entries, but one, the light blue 'Cassandra' by Kwek. Zijdezicht from De Lier received the Award for the best Aster of Keukenhof and with 9.32 points the 1st Prize.

Limonium

The participants were surprised by the fact that the Limonium was moved to an earlier stage, which disabled a large number of participants as April is too early for this crop. A request was made to have the show in May again next year. Esmeralda Farms from Aalsmeer however entered the Limonium Yellow Activa at the right time and scored 9.33 points. Second was Gebr. Van Paasen from Poeldijk with a lovely uniform entry which gained 9.53 points. The topper of the show became Fa. Gebr. C&T van Wingerden from Kwintsheul with Limonium Starlight Wings in a superb quality, scoring 9.62 points and the Award and also the Keukenhof Award for the best Limonium.

Saintpaulia

Not only flower bulbs or bulbous flowers are welcome at Keukenhof, also Kalanchoe and Saintpaulia have been participating in shows for many years. It is hard for growers to select a uniform product for a show as this one, and many entries did not score more than 9.0 points. However, Kw. H. Appelboom BV from Rijsenhout showed a new type of Saintpaulia, the 'Neverfloris', which was an interesting addition to the assortment.
The winner though became Kwekerij Vlasman from Mijdrecht with a reasonably rich flowering cultivar; the pink entry was well selected, uniform, and scored 9.20 points and the Award and became the best Saintpaulia of Keukenhof.

Kalanchoe

A super quality was shown. Kalanchoe is a trendy potplant which can be used as a house plant, but also as a patio or garden plant. In this show the house plant was judged in two competitions: one for single flowering and one for multi flowering Kalanchoe.

Single flowering

The quality of the entered products was good. Kalanchoe 'Hera'by Strijbisverbeek BV from Maasdijk scored 9.5 points. The dark pink cultivar was beautifully uniform. However one entry was just a little bit better: Kalanchoe 'African Orange' by Hans Kuilboer Potplantenkw. from Heerhugowaard scored 9.60 points and the Award with a good relation between flower and leaf and shown in a uniform condition. It scored 9.60 points and the Award.

Multi flowering

A stormy development of the double Kalanchoe has taken place, and therefore the number of entries was big: nearly 50. Also here a good quality was shown. The big winner was KP Holland from Naaldwijk with Rosalina Don Angelo received the highest score of the day: 9.70 points and the Award of best Kalanchoe of Keukenhof 2010.
