Large assortment of perennials at Keukenhof
The Section Perennials has always played an important role in the final stages of Keukenhof. The working group responsible for this show succeeded once more in showing a tremendous assortment of perennials to growers and public.
Flowering plant pot size 9 cm
Appr. 60 entries were shown. The rich flowering Kalanchoe Patio Bells by Presikhaaf Kwekerij gained 9.08 points and preliminary third place, which was shared by Polimodium 'Blue Pearl' by Penninx Kw. Second a Lewisia 'Little Peach' by Vaste Plantenkw. Jos Swinkels, gaining 9.10. On the lead was Geum coccineum 'Borisii' by Penninx Kwekerijen BV, which scored 9.15. After a second judgement Rijnbeek & Zn. from Boskoop scored the second place with 9.10 for a Polemodium Stairway to Heaven, but it did not approach the Geum 'Borissii' by Penninx Kw. from Beek en Donk, which received the Award.
Flowering Plant 1.5 litre
An assortment of appr. 50 entries. In the first judgement Kees van den Aardwegh came thhird with a large pot Convallaria majalis 'Bordeaux' with 9.17 points. Just a bit better with 9.18 was Decker-Jacobs BV with Scabiosa columbiara 'Pink Mist'. This firm also showed Houstonia caerulea 'Millands Variety'with 9.20 points. In the second judgement however things changed totally: Second came the entry by Gebr. Van der Salm from Boskoop with their Lavandula 'Anouk', which scored 9.35 points. The winner remained Decker-Jacobs BV from Heythuysen with the rather common Primula japonica in very compact condition with beautiful leaves, scoring 9.40 and the Award!
Novelties
After a first judgment two companies went in the lead: AB Cultivars from Zuidwolde with Campanula Viking, gaining 9.0 points and Kebra VOF from Noordwijkerhout, which was good for the second and first place with Primula 'Silver Bay' with 9.15 points and Verbascum 'Clementine' with 9.23 points. Also in the second judgment this score was maintained.
Foliage plant Potsize 9 cm
Also here appr. 60 entries; as many other times J. de Roover Vaste Pl. from Strijbeek showed Sempervivum. This time S. juphii.
Thymus 'Silver Queen'by Jos Swinkels from Sterksel had a beautiful silver colour and gained a second place with 9.05 points. The Nomination for the first place was for Rijnbeek & Zn Sam BV from Boskoop with Astrantia major 'Sunningdale Variegated'with an excellent leaf quality and uniform condition good for 9.10. Also in the second judgement this was true and therefore Rijnbeek gained the Award for Astrantia with the beautiful pure and decorative leaf.
Foliage plant 1,5 litre
Nearly 80 entries and a competition with special qualities. Many plants would improve in the second rating. Salvia argentea by Decker Jacobs from Heythuysen scored 9.07 points and the second place in the first judgment and with Glechoma 'Variegata' with 9.10 points a first place. In the second judgement the quality of a great number of plants had clearly improved, such as the Calamagrostis Overdam by Van Riel Sierplantenkw. from Beringe with 9.15 points. The Award was for the silvery garden plant Salvia argentea by Decker Jacobs.
Astilbe
LTO Groeiservice Astilbe took care of a presentation of the old cultivar 'Bonn'. The red colour gave an extra dimension to the plant, which was in uniform condition. The winner finally became the pink cultivar 'Europa', with beautiful clean leaves and perfect in ripeness: 9.30 points and the Award!
Astilbe Novelties
The same LTO group was responsible for Astilbe 'Milk and Honey' and 'Drum and Bass'; two candidates in this competition. 'Drum and Bass' scored best with 9.30 points and the Award.
Hosta
J. de Roover from Strijbeek showed the good old 'Patriot', a beautiful Hosta, which scored 9.07 points. Heemskerk is an expert in this field and showed an enormous collection of Hosta. H. 'Halcyon' preliminary scored best because of the beautiful blue colour: 9.17 points. In the second judgement the quality had improved significantly and thus the second and third place were for H. Catherine and Climax. However, the winner from the first competition had also improved and thus scored 9.30 points and the Award. Heemskerk Vaste Planten from Noordwijk was the grower of this winner.
Hosta novelties
Paul Vernooij from De Zilk surprised the jury with his yellow/green Hosta 'Marmelade', which gained 9.20 points. H. 'Tom Schmid' impressed the jury. This greay blue Hosta with an ivory edge was perfect and totally undamaged at the moment of judgement. This plant scored 9.52 points and the Award for the novelties.
