Broeker Auction show with roses in wonderful quality

The Broeker Veiling Rose show may be called a complete show. For the rose specialist the vases with roses in form an extremely exciting competition; the show pieces of the breeding firms. For the general public the presentations of what can be done with roses. The pupils of the clusius College from Alkmaar present their work in an attractive, representative show.

Student competition
Twenty pupils from the Clusius College of Alkmaar were selected to participate in this competition of arrangements with the theme: Make a cake with roses. Creativity, technique and general impression are key words for the jury. It was a pity that not every one made a correct cake shape with an attractive 'decoration' on top. Samantha Kok made an attractive cake in asymmetric shape and became third; Iris Rood had a good shape where especially the sides with cinnamon sticks was striking. The winner was Eva van Roemburg from Zaandam: she made a really good cake with a nice red cylinder at the bottom with dark red roses and green carnations in a playful arrangement: 8.50 and the Beaker were the end score.

Boat presentations
Three boats were offered for judgement. Third became Bartels Rozen from Aalsmeer with mixed bunches. Florence Creation BV from Naaldwijk showed their products in a sleak arrangement. The winner became the boat by Eminent from Heerhugowaard, who showed roses in various circles: technically and in colour well arranged.

Small flowering / Spray show piece
With more entries than last year the quality was good. De Ruiter Innovations from Amstelveen showed Super Bubbles; however, could not get near to the spray roses from Spek rose Breeding Int. BV from Boskoop: the pink and white King Arthur was striking with thick buds and opening up with nice large flowers. This spray rose scored 9.17 points and the Beaker was thus for Spek Rose Breeding.

Large flowering show piece Extra
Twelve entries in this 'Extra large bud and flower competition. Red Naomi by Schreurs Holland BV from De Kwakel was great, however as happens more often in this sort of competions the Avalanche line goes for the prizes. Lex + scored with Sweet Avalanche with 9.35, but VKC decided to hand the beaker to Sjaak Koene from De Lier who scored 9.57 points for the best large flowering rose Extra.

Best novelty
This is a competition where it is rather difficult to determine what is really new or has added value, as most roses must prove themselves first. De Vuurlinie from De Kwakel showed Vuvuzela because of its pink colour and the ranuncle shaped heart. The white Dolomiti, a large flowering rose with a nice high bud by Olij Breeding might prove an addition to the assortment, but Olij had more to show: the Cuba Libre, a peach orange coloured rose which might prove to be best, so therefore gained the Rabobank Challenge cup.
Large flowering show piece Standard
Some 40 entries in this competition with only small differences and thus scoring around 9.1 or 9.2. Roze Aqua by Schreurs Holland BV from De Kwakel showed a beautiful piece in the right ripeness and of uniform quality and scored 9.30. Lex + The Rose Factory from Aalsmeer showed Miss Piggy (9.33 points). Even more striking however was an entry of peach orange flowers: Cuba Libre by Olij Breeding from De Kwakel scored 9.65 points and received the Challange cup by Flynth Advisors and Accountants for the best show piece of the show.

Rose spray vase growers
A good number of spray carnations was present at the show. Jana by G. Semp from De Kwakel and Bombastic by Goudriaan-Almere from Almere both scored the same number of points, which made a second judging necessary. The peach coloured Jana had an enormous amount of buds, a real spray rose, but the winner in the end was Bombastic with 9.27 points.

As to make possible a comparison with respect to bud size for this competition large flowering standard was chosen. Miss Piggy by Kw. De Singel from Berkel en Rodenrijs became third. Second ex equo the salmon peach cultivar Prima Donna by Th. op den Kelder from De Weere together with Poot Rosen VOF from Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel with the red Aqua! Earlier that weed the FloraHolland Award the Glass Tulilp 2010 was awarded to products with a future, where the Rose Deep Water by Zuurbier & Co Rozenkw. BV from Heerhugowaard came first. Also here this product was shown, which resulted in a 9.36 score. The wonderful combination of colour of the flower, the striking shiny leaves and the great stems made this entry the true winner, and thus the Beaker was for Zuurbier & Co.

Rose large flowering Extra grower
Here the in size and bud roses, differing from standard products are judged. A pleasant competition with a fine quality, in which two giants were going for the highest score. Sjaak Koene & Zn. from De Lier showed Avalanche, but had competition from an Avalanche entered by Meijer Roses from Pijnacker. ILnitially the score was the same (9.65 points), but a second judging resulted after long deliberations in a 9.a66 for Meijer Roses from Pijnacker, who were to receive the First Prize as well as the VBA cup for the best All Over entry at the growers' entries.
