Peony show Keukenhof very interesting

He would have said that so many entries would be made, would have been doubted. However, the organisation, Compass Plant, succeeded in getting more than 100 varieties in the show. VKC was asked to perform the judging and to award prizes to the highest scoring entries. These were handed out as follows:

Single flowering

Ten entries were going for the first Prize, of which the deep red cultivar 'America' entered by VOF de Horsthoek from Leiden scored most points. The jury spoke of the perfect flower shape, beautifully healthy leaves. The large flowers were beautifully uniform and scored 9.20 points.

Double flowering

A much bigger assortment in a fine quality was presented. They scored very close to eachother. Second became NOP Fleur BV from Espel with one of the first flowering lactifloras by the name of 'Primevere'. The cream white cultivara was double and scored 9.20 points. The winner though was Bloemencentrum De Oude Proeftuin from Rockanje. The bright white 'Marie Lemoine' had near perfect flowers, all flowers were uniformly ripe, it was obvious that a lot of attention and time was spent to get this result. The score was thus: First Prize with 9.38 points.

Hybrids

The largest assortment showing appr. 40 entries. Here the very best quality was shown. Third came De Wilgenhoek from Aalsmeer and 'Coral Charm' and Jac.Th. de Vroomen from Lisse with the Buckeye Belle'; both scored 9.37 points. A close second became 'Red Charm'by W. Aanhane & Zn. from Noordwijkerhout. The enormous big flowers were even and of a phantastic quality, scoring 9.43 points. The winner gained the beautiful score of 9.47 points: Wim Vriend from Andijk with 'Coral Sunset'. An enormous vase with peonies with a wonderful top flower, beautiful leaves and very firm stems. The salmon coloured flower beamed and was good for the First Prize.

Special Peony

This part of the competition was meant for a Peony with a particular radiation, or one which is not to be seen regularly. J. Boon from Bovenkarspel scored 9.27 points with a fine entry of 'Bartzella'. The best though was the dark red peony 'Command Performance' because of the beautiful high flower on the stem and the great uniformity: 9.42 points and the Prize!

Choice of the public

For the first time also a public jury was formed by members of Groei en Bloei, department Lisse. The 10 members of the jury were meant to pay attention to colour, shape, smell and other particulars. The top three became: 'Red Charm' from W. Aanhane & Zn. from Noordwijkerhout, an eye catcher, with virtually a flower in a flower. Second became 'Coral Sunset' by Wim Vriend from Andijk, who got this score after a second judging. The jury spoke of a robust, well filled flower with a striking colour. The winner though was the bright white 'Marie Lemoine' of Bloemencentrum De Oude Proeftuin from Rockanje. They received a beautiful beaker with the following motivation: beautifully filled peony, wonderful bright white colour and striking large flower. The lovely smell settled the matter.
