First National Gladiolus Exhibition a great success
After an absence of many years gladiolus is back into the spotlights with its own exhibition, which was not the case during a great number of years. In the past gladiolus exhibitions were a great source of information for growers and breeders. Now in 2010 the gladiolus is back, on a special location: Castle Keukenhof, where gladiolus is shown at its best. Two floral designers - Margriet van Dam and Tine Geerlings were responsible for all arrangements. Growers and breeders entered appr. 150 products in four contests: large flowering, small flowering, other types and novelties.
The jury was surprised by a wide assortment and had a difficult task to come to the winning products.

Large flowering Gladiolus
A beautiful assortment of on the one hand old classics and on the other products from a newer assortment. By delivering products in an earlier stage transport and handling was easier. The general quality of the wide assortment was responsible for close ranking scores. Kwekersver. Partners from Hem became third with 9.25 points with the cultivar 'Sparkler'. The relatively small flower had a special red with yellow colour with a dark red spot in the heart. Second, by the same contestant, the salmon/red gladiolus 'Demencia', a large flower well divided on the ear: 9.26 points. The Beaker for the best large flowering was clearly the bright white cultivar 'Grand Prix' by Glaco from Ens. An especially nice branch, beautiful shape of flower and all stems uniform; this gave a score of 9.34 points and the Cup.

Small flowering Gladiolus
A beautiful and especially innovating assortment was entered. The good structure of the ear with the right positioning of the flowers. The small flowering assortment is an apart segment of the smaller specialised market, which has a good keepability. Most cultivars are meant for the garden segment. J. en P. Snoek & Zn. BV from Ens is specializing herein and thus gained most points. Second became 'Flevo Junior'with 9.05 points and 9.08 the winner with the cultivar 'Flevo Frizzle'. This lilac gladiolus had a characteristic dark purple spot. The jury was impressed by the beautiful quality of all stems and gave the beaker to this best small flowering gladiolus.

Other types
A typical product for gardens, the Nanus and Colvillei types. As a cut assortment these show too little volume though. The winner became the red cultivar 'Robinetta', which was of a beautiful quality, with 9.04 points. This crop belonged to Gebr. P&M Hermans from Voorhout.

Novelties
A large assortment was entered in this contest. The jury was enthousiastic about the number of promising cultivars: appr. 70! Snoek gained 9.13 points with number W 613 3-4 . The same score was for Kwekersver. Partners from Hem with the cultivars 'Claudy' and one under number. The winner came from the participating breeders: Prisma Gladiolus from Hillegom. The 01.099.06 became third, a white cultivar with a red spot with 9.21 points. Second became 03.294.01, a red cultivar with striking flowers and buds: 9.24 points. The best however became a wonderful classic pink gladiolus, number 04.397.01, with a striking and uniform quality. This product scored 9.33 points and the Cup.
