P. Hofland winner Jan Goemans Trophy with Freesia 'Maya'

28-03-2011

With a reducing number of breeders and entries at shows also the number of novelties is under pressure. The planting of the novelties on nurseries was reduced to 10 cultivars this year. Innovation is very important. New impulses and new cultivars offer new chances, and thus the Jan Goemans Freesia Trophy may be helping in finding novelties which are an improvement growing, keepability or quality wise. Clear objective criteria are the basis for a fair judgement of a potential improved new freesia cultivar which also has market potential.

This year ten cultivars were in the race: P. Hofland entered Freesia Maya and Rio, Penning Freeesia  Morning Sun and Riga. Fa. v.d. Bos Flowerbulbs entered Albertville, Clarissa, Rubina River, Toulouse, Tournesol and Yellow Passion.

The Freesia committee of VKC has monitored these cultivars and came to the following conclusion: the choice for the Trophy was the single flowering yellow Freesia 'Maya', a strong grower, and what is more important, a fine workable freesia, especially in the transport phase. This cultivar can be grown yearround, which is a strong plus. Besides a good vase life 'Maya' has a good keepability. All in all a good improvement in the yellow assortment. P. Hofland BV from 's-Gravenzande may cherish this Trophy during a year.
