Various choices to be made by Narcissus jury on Keukenhof show

For the first time in history the Narcissus show was offered to a special jury with the assignment to choose the best products for planting on a large scale in towns and public greens. They were also asked to choose the best Narcissus for smaller planting in round abouts, flower beds or other under planting on a small scale. Finally the choice was to be made of the best Narcissus for bowls and containers in the public space, e.g. Narcissus which are not too high and which are flowering early. The jury consisted of specialists from heads of departments of public green of towns and of garden and landscape architects, who were offered a wide variety of products, suitable for growing wild.

Thirty three cultivars with a innovative character were nominated. The ones scoring highest reiceive the Keukenhof Award.

Bowl and container planting

P. Pennings entered Narcissus 'Martinette', suitable for its wonderful smell and the striking flower shape. Veul showed 'Fairness', with nice full flowers. Bisschop had the 'Attraction', a Narcissus which 'looks you in the eye', with short stem. W.F. Leenen entered 'Citroen', with a striking colour and which is good to combine in bowls and containers. H.M. Meeuwissen showed 'Longwith', pure of colour and a wonderful radiation because of its simplicity. The big winner was The Daffodil 10 from Burgervlotbrug with 'Pacific Rim', a Narcissus with a bright colour, yellow covering leaves with a yellow cup with a red/orange edge, innovative in shape and very attractive because of its colour. The score 9.70 points was good for the Award.

Flower bed planting or other small scaled underplanting

Here a lot of competing products could be seen. M.H. v.d. Zon showed 'Bantam', a Narcissus which you see from far away already, because of its refreshing character. J. Kuiper entered 'Alliance', a nice yellow Narcissus with turned down covering leaf, which looked sturdy. H.M. Meeuwissen showed a topper in the shape of 'X odorus', a nice open flower with natural  appearance. In the category 'oldies' 'Cragford' by Aad van Ruiten proved to be good, especially because of its early flowering. Coop. Kwekersver. spectrum from Breezand entered the innovative 'Ex Mystery, which was striking because of its many flowers and the striking flower shape. The winner though became J. de Winter from Voorhout with Narcissus 'All White', obviously a white Narcissus with turned down covering leaves and a beautiful large white cup. A pure Narcissus, excellent for use as combination and flower bed planting. 9.66 and the Award was for J. de Winter.

 Large scaled under planting

C.B. Koster showed 'Pinza', which was nominated because of its compact growth and a flower like a sun. W.F. Leenen had a split crowned Narcissus, 'Delta'. M.H. v.d. Zon & Zn. entered 'Chinita', a Narcissus with a striking colour, which grows nicely upward. J. Kuiper had the 'Double Campernelle', a multi flowering, double Narcissus. Narcissenbroeiers Bollenstreek were also nominated with the oldie 'Actaea'. H.M. Meeuwissen offered two candidates, the 'John's Delight' and 'Beryl', both two strong contestants. Preijde Bloembollen showed a recognisable, good, compact Narcissus: 'Jack Snipe'. P. Pennings entered 'Roulette', a striking Narcissus. Kwekersver. Spectrum from Breezand entered two toppers: 'Exotic Mystery', with a striking flower shape, multi flowering, but also the small flowering Narcissus 'Baby Boomer', a yellow Narcissus with fine and small leaves and an abundance of flowers. This fragile, fine flower is excellent for under planting. Unanimously the jury decided to choose this product as the winner with 9.74 points and the Award.
