Amaryllis and special bulbous crops strongly represented at Keukenhof

Especially at the official opening of Keukenhof Amaryllis are attracting attention. In the Willem Alexander Pavillion many can be seen. The Dutch area of Amaryllis is diminishing also because of the fact that the competition from abroad is large. The Dutch Amaryllis grower has the task to make the right choices and the breeders are busy introducing specific Nice products for the Dutch market. Pot as well as cut Amaryllis could be seen during this show.

The first judgement of the Amaryllils group was earlier this season on 25 March, with the following results:

Large flowering Amaryllis pot

Third came H. 'Olaf'with 9.46 points by Floralia from 's-Gravenzande. The largeflowering double white H. 'Ice Queen, also from this firm scored 9.47 points and became second. The 1st Award Amaryllis was for H. 'Flamenco Queen', again from Floralia. This beautiful red and white Amaryllis received 9.55 because of the correct relation between stem and flower and especially the striking colour scheme!

Large flowering cut

A wide assortment could be seen and the quality was great for the time of the year. Ferrari and Red Lion were lacking though.

Third became H. 'Showmaster'by Van der Ende Flowers from Maasdijk with a total score of 9.42. The second place was for Harry van Paasen from The Hague with the variety 'Herculus', a violet flower with large calyxes in the right ripeness. The first Amaryllis Award was, just as the 3rd place, for Van der Ende Flowers from Maasdijk with H. 'Bouquet'with 9.52 points. It concerns a salmon coloured variety, which started a second life. The first registration dates from 1957!

Special flower shapes 

The special flower shapes are highly appreciated, which unfortunately remains a niche product because of the way this product marketed. The award was for 'La Paz', a red-pink flowr with pointed flower leaves. The three stems were striking and caused a richly flowering product. The winner of this product, Floralia from  's-Gravenzande received 9.33 points.  

The two judgement sessions of 14 April also gave many winners.

Large flowering Amaryllis pot

Third came H. 'Samba'by Floralia from 's-Gravenzande. 'Red Rival'by Boers received 9.46 points and the second prize. The 1st prize however was for H. 'Moscow', also by Floralia. This striking white Amaryllis received the highest score because of the correct relation stem/flower and the large flowers and fat buds: 9.48 points!

Special flower shapes

In this group the award was for 'La Paz', the red/pink flower with pointed flower leaves. The entrant of this product was also this time Floralia from 's-Gravenzande, who scored 9.18 points.

Stands

The jury awarded the first prize to Floralia from 's-Gravenzande with 9.50 points and Barnhoorn from Noordwijkerhout also became an awardwinner in this second judgement.

 

Special bulbous crops cut

In the special weekend of the famous flower bulb parade also the yearly special  bulb presentation was organised at Keukenhof.  a great number of participants present a wide assortment of specoal bulbous crops. The prizes were awarded as follows:

Muscari

The best entry by Kwekerij De Schullhorn from Anna Paulowna was Baby's Breath. Paul van Bentum Bloembollen from Noordwijkerhout entered a violet blue Muscari with a white edge under number, of which the flowers were shiny. Even better was the dark blue Muscari with a white edge with number 02-10. The winner though became CS Weijers from Hillegom with Muscari 'Mountain Lady', a beautiful Muscari with huge blue/white flowers, which scored 9.44 points.

 

Special bulbous crops in pot

Appr. 65 entries of an extremely interesting assortment of special bulbous crops of great quality. Third came Kwekerij De Schullhorn with an imposing entry of Corydalis solida 'Incisa', which scored 9.28 points. De Goede Bulbivaria from Breezand entered Frittelaria Michaelovski which also scored  because of the great number of flowers and the straight stems. CS Weijers showed a rich flowering Eranthis cillicia, which is a wonderful achievement for the time of the year. The winner with 9.30 points was De Goede Bulbivaria from Breezand. They showed the impressive Ipheion 'Rolf Fiedler', rich flowering, compact and of a deep blue colour.

Special bulbous crops cut

The most important representatives were Tulip, Zantedeschia and Frittelaria. CS Weijers was well represented with Ornithogalum dubium orange in a heavy quality and Frittelaria imperialis 'Orange Beauty', which had a good colour and many flowers. A second place was for Valkering Bros from Egmond aan de Hoef, with a quality which was nearly too good for Dutch standards. The jury judged the perfect ripeness and heavy quality for a glasshouse grown product with 9.36 points and the prize for Best Special Bulbous crop 2011.

Stands

Stands with a score of 9 points or more receive an extra Prize, awarded by Keukenhof. Nine stands were judged of which J.P. v.d. Lans from Lisserbroek as well as Paul van Bentem Bloembollen fitted the category. Also Th. C. Hoogenboom from Roelofarendsveen and Rene Zijerveld from Lisserbroek received this prize. Kwekerij De Schullhorn ended 4th and third was De Goede Bulbivaria with 9.30 points with a special assortment with various Frittelaria varieties of good quality. Second came the Amaryllis entry by Floralia from Maasdijk: 9.32 points. The winner though was CS Weijers from Hillegom with a total score of 9.60points for a stand with a wide assortment of special quality. The first Award was theirs.
