Dutch rose growers present a fine show
It is a known fact that the Dutch rose is under pressure; however, the Dutch rose growers showed not be be beaten yet. The assortment at Keukenhof was remarkably representative. A good auction quality was entered at the show and it is good to organize trade and quality judgements to show how roses can be delivered in the chain and how their keepability is. A wide assortment of products from growers and breeders was judged. Winner was Sweet Avalanche+ of Meijer Roses from Pijnacker.

The breeders showed a wide assortment of innovative roses, which is stimulating to see. Promising cultivars were the interesting yellow Sunstar from Kordes Int. BV from De Kweakel, the Red Knight and the two coloured Rosa Bella of De Ruiter Innovations from Amstelveen and the white Apres Ski by Schreurs Holland BV from De Kwakel. This last rose is not available for the auction yet however. The White Naomi from the same firm and the rather new cultivar Ice Bear by Olij Rozen from De Kwakel also scored high. The already mentioned Apres Si, Red Knight and the Aqua by Schreurs received a fine score of 9.30 points. It was Olij Rozen from De Kwakel who scored 9.35 with Cuba Libre, a beautiful orange/yellow rose, which opened up gracefully. The large new yellow Sunstar from Kordes Roses Int. from De Kwakel became second. This welcome addition to the assortment scored 9.45 points. The winner of the Award was Schreurs Holland BV from De Kwakel with White Naomi, a super rose with large flowers and great quality: 9.55 points.

The small flowering and spray rose assortment is also under pressure, often the number of participants can be counted with one hand. Also now only five entries, of which two were striking: the Lady Bombastic and the White Lady; especially this last one had a nice spray with many flowers. This entry scored best: 9.3 points and was presented by the breeder Interplant BV from Leersum.

The largest category was the one of the large flowering roses. Although the assortment is diminishing the entries at the show were very representative. The fact that some damages showed, lowered the scores somewhat. In the top though, entries of high quality could be seen. Van Os Roses Holland BV from De Lier showed Red Naomi: 9.35 points. The same score was for C. van Wijk/Rozenbos from Nieuwaal with Avalanche+. The real show roses in the top scored high: Sjaak Koene & Zn from De Lier with 9.4 points for Avalanche+. Meijer Roses from Pijnacker was a worthy competitor with his Sweet Avalanche+ which scored 9.45. This score had to be shared with White Naomi! From Van Velden Roses from Wateringen, both super quality. The big winner became Meijer Roses from Pijnacker; his entry of Avalanche+ was the best of the show. Ripeness, flower size, leaf and stem quality were perfect and received 9.55 points and the 1st Award. This entry was also valued as Best Rose of Keukenhof and received the Overall Prize.
