Alstroemeria Award 2011

28-04-2011

Alstroemeria Award for 'Teswaiian' Hawaiian Dream by Hilverda/Kooy

Which variety is the best in the race for the title of technical and commercial improvement of Alstroemeria in the Netherlands? Which variety is promising in growth or commercial aspects? Three nominations were left in the final phase for the determination of the winner of the Alstroemeria Award 2011.

'Konalaya' Himalaya by Konst Alstroemeria and Hilverda Kooy Plant technology presented 'Teswaiian' Hawaiian Dream' and  Royal van Zanten was the third nominated with 'Zalsalyn' Roselyn.

The followed method is that breeding firms can enter their cultivars two years before the final judgement, in which period the candidates are followed by the Alstroemeria committee of VKC. After one year the total number of entries is reduced to three (maximally 5) varieties, based on information about flowering tests, vase judgements,  practical growing information and visits to the nurseries. Only the varieties with reasonably certain information can be nominated: in this end phase three.

During the first months in 2011 the nominees are judged on market aspects, keepability and growing results; the committee is extended with two representatives from the auciton or trade. The nominated varieties are judged on practical nurseries throughout the country.
The variety has to be at the disposal of commercial flower growers.

All three varieties sufficed and the jury had to hand in a written vote after visits to the nurseries. Thus a variety showed; the following motivation applies for this Alstroemeria.

‘Teswaiian’ Hawaiian Dream distinguishes itself because of the purple colour with a white edge. The quality is heavy and it has large flowers. Also after the first season heavy stems were produced, and it proved to be a good addition to the assortment. The flower buds are showing colour and the weight of the stems is fine. It is a good grower, but not what you call a 'bread alstroemeria'. The crop needs good guidance and is well suited for the exclusive market. The Award once again is for Hilverda Kooy from Aalsmeer.
