Orchids at Keukenhof 2011

The time that some one wants to promote your product seems over. The mentality changes, which is a capital failure when one thinks that some one else will enter products. Once or twice a year the orchid needs to be placed in a central position. Keukenhof is a well suited place to do this, but one should realise that only together things can be realised. Perhaps the Orchid shows need a different approach next year, where entries in trade quality are made, thus auction ripe in stage A1. No special selection any more, but taken from the supply. Consequently the VKC can offer more judgings such as a trade, consumers and or quality judgement. Then the products can come into flowering entirely (for some products without refreshment). After a second judging after appr. 4 to 5 weeks the end result is judged, possibly with a keepability test. This may be a great opportunity to show that all orchid growers in the Netherlands cannot hide any longer, but should participate at Keukenhof.

The 2011-show is one to be proud of. Sometimes visitors could no longer enter the pavillion because of the rush. The winners of 2011 were:

Cymbidium large flowering

Nearly 70 entries of a fine qualitly were offered for judgement. The length of the stem, the number of flowers, the colour and the uniformity of the entry are the most important criteria. D. Maarsen from Rijsenhout scored 9.48 points with Danny Green, a Cymbidium with a good colour and length. Ronald Ammerlaan from Pijnacker also scored this amount of points for the orange 'Manon', a product with an innovating colour on a long sleak stem. In the last refreshment 'Nevada' by Sanfiero scored close with 9.46 points. The jury decided however that the winning Cymbidium is called 'Manon' and thus the winner was Ronald Ammerlaan from Pijnacker.

Cymbidium small flowering

Appr. 50 entries of excellent quality differed marginally, which was good for an interesting competition. Leo v.d. Helm from Nootdorp scored 9.47 points with Sirocco. The orange/brown colour is refreshing and the stem had a large amount of flowers. In the second delivery the dark red 'Sultan' scored highest: 9.47 points. Also the last delivery showed no higher figures. A top entry was Cmbidium CFM by Kw. Leekade from Bleiswijk and ' Sultan', once again by Leo v.d. Helm, but 'Sirocco', also from this entrant became the winner.

Cymbidium small flowered mixed

A mixed box of Cymbidium is often offered through the auction and to the trade channel, but also at Keukenhof this product scores high. The exact mix of colour and its intensity, stem length and number of flowers per stem are important. Leo v.d. Helm from Nootdorp once again showed class products. In the first show 9.32 points with a beautiful mix. The second and third time he even scored 9.36 points, thus the Award was his.

Pot Cymbidium

A contest of great value for the show. The plants do impress highly when the branches are in full flower. Muilwijk-Besuijen from Amstelveen showed a beautiful collection of pot Cymbidiums. The products by Ruiter Orchidee from Andijk are of a totallly different league. With small flowering pot Cymbidiums he shows to be a specialist. The Amelia Earthart surprised the jury with a wonderful cascading shape with enormously many flowers and stems to a plant. This result was good for 9.38 points. His best entry was Cymbidium Dorothy Stockstill NH however, a dark red Cymbidium with a striking colour, with comopact growth, good position of the leaves and many flower stems. The entry received a score of 9.40 points and the Award.

Cymbidium large flowering mixed

It is not easy to show four strong colours with one stem in an excellent quality and uniformity. Sanfiero from De Lier showed a nice mixture in fine colours in the opening show. His entry was valued at 9.36 points because of the top quality. Van Daalen Orchideeen from 's-Gravenzande did not improve this score: 9.31 points. Products with a tremendous high level was shown with eight entries with the best mix by P. van Tilburg Kwekerij BV from Rijnsburg. He showed great trademenship with his beautiful mix of four colours which scored 9.53 points and the Award.

Phalaenopsis large flowering

A new jury, like stated before, would be ideal for judging Phalaenopsis. Now the jury is treated to a wonderful supply of many interesting entries of selected Phalaenopsis. The quality could be compared to last year's. The assortment is also growing in quality. Various entrants were offering their entries with a reasonable amount of buds, which enabled a second judgement. All entries were of great quality; the scores were close. Pikoplant from Nootdorp was the absolute best though. He was good for three winners, of which the best, the Phalaenopsis 'Fancy', was awarded 9.72 points. The red/white cultivar had four flowering stems, which gave a compact plant in an ideal pot/plant/flower relation. This score was good for the Award.

Phalaenopsis small flowering

A good number of entries of fine quality was divided voer two deliveries. The improving keepability is a pro. The scores were high, up till 9.58 points. More than 60 entries were made. Van der Hoorn Orchideeen from Ter Aar scored best with an entry under number, which scored 9.52 points, which was not enough for the Award though. This was earned by Fa. Pannekoek from Berkel en Rodenrijs with the Phalaenopsis 'Tiny Doll', an entry of uniform flowering, great stem length, flowring stage of all flowers. In all a great achievement, which was valued at 9.58 points and the Award.

 Oncidium

Oncidium, Odontoglossum, Colmanara and types were sometimes a bit unripe in the first badge, which was to be seen in the score. Fa. Lansbergen had a strong contestant with Oncidium Munsterland Stern, which was valued with 9.13 points. Top Orchid from Sint Maarten became first with Belleara Howard's Dream in great quality. The large flowers and the special colour made this entry special, and good for 9.22 points. Van der Geest Orch. scored high with Odontoglossum Silver in a bent shape in the second delivery, as well as Colmanara 'Jungle Monarch by Kw. Meeslouwer, they both scored 9.21 points. This means that Belleara Howard's Dream deserved the Award.

Dendrobium

Thirty entries in a striking inflorescence and richness of flowering of the stems. Pannekoek from Berkel en Rodenrijs had a great entry with 'Tropical Seasons', which was well positioned, compact and of a beautiful colour. De Hoog Orchideeën from Delfgauw topped this score though with Spring Dream Apollon with a nice full stem in full flower with a uniform quality: 9.28 points. In the second badge Pannekoek showed even better quality: 'Pink Surprise' was his best entry with 9.30 points. Again De Hoog Orchideeen went over this score with Dendrobium Cornet King Akatsuki with 9.33 points, because of a nice, large, striking amount of flowers in fine quality. Thus the Award was theirs.

Other Orchids pot

Besides Miltoniopsis, Brassia and Paphiopedilum were entered. Although the participation of Hendriks Orchids from Bleiswijk was doubtful in the beginning, their entry of Miltoniopsis 'Drippleflor' proved best with 9.22 points. This red cultivar had nice full plants with a great number of flowers. This score was not high enough to gain the award though; this was for 'White Summer Tania' by the same firm with 9.25 points. The white/pink flowers were abundant and nicely straight at the stem. The pure leaves and great quality were good for the Award.

Other orchids cut

A contest which was well participated this year. In the first judgement 13 entries were represented with cut Phalaenopsis. Pulcher Potcultures from Dongen proved best with Phalaenopsis 'Taipei', which was awarded with 9.30 points because of its nice, heavy, full stem. This score was not improved in the second delivery and thus the Award was theirs.
