Perennial show at Keukenhof

Large assortment at Perennial show

The section Perennials has been an important part in the final shows at Keukenhof. The new working group succeeded in showing an enormous assortment of perennials to specialist and general public. Together with Keukenhof the plants were arranged surprisingly, which scored high with the public. The perennials are attractive for the general public, as one can often see people taking notes and photographs. A great number of contests were organised with a judgement in two parts, where the highest score counted for one of the many Awards.

Flowerering plants, pot size 9 cm

Appr. 50 entries were presented to the jury. Kwekerij Van der Lans from Beinsdorp showed a fine entry of Lithodora diffusa ´Heavenly Blue´, also Kees vd Aardwegh showed a good entry of Dodecatheon ´Album. Jos Swinkels vof from Sterksel even had two nominations, the Saxifraga ´Findling´and S. pedemontana ´White Alis´. All entries were flowering nicely, but could improve in the second round. For a larger part this became true. Besides the nominees many entries were clearly of a better quality. Finally the Saxifraga pedemontana ´White Alis´ appeared to be the strongest with 9.10 points. The jury was impressed by an entry of good colour of all five plants which flowered simultaneously, compact and of a good quality. Thus the Award was for Jos Swinkels vof from Sterksel.

 

Flowering Plants, 1,5 liter

70 entries of a beautiful assortment. At first the Convallarias took the lead. J. de Jong Vaste Planten from Aalsmeer showed a beautiful pot Convallaria majalis ´Bordeaux´. Kwekerij Huisman from Heemskerk scored a bit higher with Convallaria majalis ´Bridal Choise´, an entry of which the flowers presented well above the leaves and who took the lead with 9.19 points. However, Rodgersia ´Bloody Mary´came to full growth and presented itself best in the second show. The pure leaf, the intense colour of the leaf and the blood red flowers were good for the Award with 9.30 points, and also best Perennial of Keukenhof 2011.

    

 Novelties

In this category plants were shown which had not been introduced, or only just been offered to trade. Gootjes Allplant BV from Heerhuwowaard had an interesting entry of Geranium ´Azurro´, as well as Darwin Plants Witteman and Co from Hillegom with Heuchera ´Big Top Gold´. The jury was most impressed by Kebra vof from Noordwijk, who drew the attention to Podophyllum ´Spotty Dotty´. This foliage plant is striking because of the beautiful dots. A good plant for shadowy spots, which was well presented and scored 9.15 points and the Award.

35 entries for which leaf quality and relations pot-plant are important. In the first judgement the jury stated that the warm weather had a significant influence on the quality. Some plants clearly suffered from transport and storage. The VKC jury could only nominate two Sempervivums after the first round, being S. ´Commander Hay´and the ´Moerkerks Merit´by Jos Swinkels vof from Sterksel. Luckily the second judging proved better. Heuchera micrantha ´Palace Purple´ by Kwekerij Penninx BV from Beek en Donk had come into colour in a beautiful way and the five plants were uniform, which was reason enough for the jury to hand the Award to Penninx Kwekerijen BV with 9.0 points for this Heuchera ´Palace Purple´.

Foliage plants 1,5 liter

More than 80 entries with special qualities. The extensive assortment offered many possibilties. Many plants improved in the second round. Salvia argentea, the silver coloured, strongly hairy Salvia in a wonderful quality, Thalictrum ´Anne´ by Kwekerij De Windroos and Houttuynia cordata ´Chameleon´ by Kees v.d. Aardweg all scored high. In the second round Heuchera ´Frosted Violet´ by Decker/Jacobs BV from Heythuysen scored best with 9.20 points and the Award.

Astilbe

During the whole season Astilbes have been represented in the Willem Alexander Pavillion. The last show they participate in the judging. For this presentation LTO Groeiservice Astilbe is responsible, but now also other growers took part. Van Woudenberg Tuinplanten from Zevenhuizen stayed ahead with Astilbe Younique Salmon. This special coloured light green Astilbe scored 9.3 points and the Award because of its compactness, the special colour, the beautiful leaves and the uniformity of the flower screens.

Hosta

Hosta is always showing well in this show. A great many years already Heemskerk Vaste Planten shows a beautiful collection with large plants. After the first judgement this firm took the lead with Hosta ´Prima Donna´, which was of a great uniformity. This entry was followed by Vernooy vof from De Zilk with his best entry up till then± ´Orange Marmelade´. The last judgement however Vernooy had a winner with Hosta ´Wintersnow´, a wide leafed Hosta of wonderful quality. With 9.41 oints the Award was earned.
