Jubilee Rose show at Broeker Auction

30-05-2011

The organisation of this show is in the hands of a great number of fantastic people who work days, weeks, even months to enable this for the rose trade. This year a very representative and attractive jubilee show has been set up. The combination breeder/grower is very important here for the introduction of new production varieties with a longer keepability and more intense colours. This show has many prizes to hand out and the jury worked as follows:

Pupils' contest

Seven students of the Clusius College from Alkmaar were selected to participate. The assignment was to make a bridal show in their own style room. Three show pieces had to be made: a table arrangement with import roses and a bridal bouquet. The race was between Brenda Scholten from Uitgeest and Esther Pletting from Heemskerk. Brenda showed a bridal suite in salmon pink, whilst Esther chose red. Brenda showed a correct set up, whilst Esther was working with a difficult corner in the stand. The VKC jury finally judged Esther to be the winner for consistent work: the right balance in technique, use of colour and set up gave the stand an extra dimension. The arrangements were well made and dary, and also the bridal bouquet was of a good level. With 8.3 points Esther Pletting became the winner!

Small flowering / Spray show piece

Another interesting contest because of the increase of entries of spray roses. Olij Breeding gained 9.17 points with a fine entry of Exclusive Sensation, as many as Spek Rose Breeding from Boskoop, who gained the same score with Irischka. Peach Vision of Esmeralda Farms from Aalsmeer though scored 9.2 points, which was good for the Cup.

Large flowering Show piece, Standard

An exciting competition, as the differences were small. 9.10 points for De Ruiter Innovations from Amstelveen for Chiri and the Revival by Van Kleef Roses BV from Aalsmeer, or the 9.18 points of Schreurs Holland BV from De Kwakel with Baby Love or the 9.22 points, scored by Kordes Roses Int. from De Kwakel with Cherry Amore. The winner in the standard roses finally became Olij Breeding from De Kwakel with Sweet Dolomiti in a wonderful quality. The uniformity in growth and colour were good for the first Prize with 9.27 points.

Large flowering Show piece, Elite

A wonderful contest with show pieces with 10 roses of top quality. The quality and uniformity of all roses is most important here. Lex+ The Rose Factory from Aalsmeer or Rozenkwekerij Sjaak Koene & Zn. from De Lier were in the race with respectively Sweet Avalanche and Avalanche. Lex+ scored 9.40 points and Sjaak Koene ended with 9.45 points: a super vase of white roses, well picked with care and love and presented wonderfully. Thus the 1st Prize was his, as well as an Extra Prize: the Flynt Overall cup for the best entry of show pieces.

Best novelty

In this contest it is rather to determine the real novelty, as most of these roses have yet to prove themselves. Anyway, promising products were shown this time, like Apres Ski or Whisky. Sweet Dolomiti scored best with a well filled bud of good length. The beautiful flower colour, nearly thornless stem and good leaf were reason to judge this rose as Novelty of this jubilee show. The winner is Olij Breeding from De Kwakel.

Rose, spray and small flowered vase - growers

There were no remarkable results in the small flowering products, but there were with the spray roses, which were well represented. Also in breeding we see more introductions. 15 vases were judged and the two coloured Lady Bombastic had a wonderful shape, but missed ripeness (Goudriaan-Almere from Almere). 'the salmon pink 'Barbarossa'with a long stem with fine shape and a special salmon orange flower scored higher: 9.25 points and the 1st Prize was thus for G. Semp from De Kwakel.

Rose large flowering standard - growers

The jury was shown appr. 40 vases of a wide trade assortment with a great number of novelties. Kwekerij A. v.d.  Burg from Heerhugowaard showed Fresh Moments, a beautiful new white cultivar, which scored 9.23 points. The winner in this category became Poot Roses VOF from Nieuwerkerk a.d. IJssel with a magnificent entry of Aqua. The uniform character was good for 9.35 points!

Rose Large flowering Extra - growers

In this category large exhibition flowers are presented. The leaf quality was great, the flowers had wonderful shape, colour and size. Also ripeness and stemquality scored high. Avalanche and its types were doing well here: Steejo Roses from Bergschenhoek scored 9.44 points, just a bit more than Sjaak Koene & Zn. from De Lier and Velden Roses from Wateringen. Meijer Roses from Pijnacker became the great winner though with Sweet Avalanche and the white Avalanche. The Sweet Avalanche scored 9.55 points, and the Avalanche 9.aa65 points. The jury spoke of a super vase of roses, perfect! Also the overall prize, the VBA-cup was for Meijer Roses from Pijnacker.
