Week of the pot rose in Lottum

A fine initiative has been taken to put the rose in a central position during a special week. Outdoor roses, not only for garden or public parks, but also for terraces and patios were entered in a large number. Besides this also pot roses, used in living rooms and conservatories, but also on the patio. VKC was required to judge these products and a jury was formed with specialists from trade, auction, research and the sector. The organisation allowed three contests, for which extra prizes could be acquired. These were divided as follows:

Pot roses

A fine quality was shown. BM Roses from Maasland showed roses in a 'three pot'. The variety White Jewel of this firm gained 9.4 because of its rich flowering and beautifully contrasting white colour with the leaf. The winner in this contest became Rosa Mundo from Meerlo: they showed a large pot with a great number of pot roses. The compact roses flowered abundantly and as a member of the jury said: 'you virtually have a bunch of flowers on your balcony, patio or terrace'. The best entry was Sunny Beach Forever, a compact yellow pot rose with a bright colour, rich flowering. The beautiful leaves made this entry a winning one with 9.46 points.

Roses in 3 pots smaller than 5 liters

A fine assortment was shown. It was not easy to compare the various types, thus the jury did have a hard task. Rosen Tantau from Uetersen, Germany showed the rose 'Hansestadt Rostock', which gained 9.5 points because of the uniformity of all the roses in the three pots. Rosarium Dura Rose from Blitterswijck entered two products, of which the first - Manhattan Blue -  was striking because of the innovating colour. This rose may well be a valuable innovation, which scored 9.6 points.

The best entry of this firm however was 'Stadt Rome', a wonderfully rich flowering red/pink rose of great quality: many flowers and buds and all three pots showed a great uniformity. The jury valued this with 9.8 points and the first prize for Dura Rose from Blitterswijck.

Roses in a pot larger than 5 liters

With 75 entries a large competition for the entrants. Again Rosa Mundo from Meerlo presented itself well: a third place for the rose 'Schneeflocke', a rich flowering rose with a nice bright white colour (9.4 points). A good second place was for Boomkw. Vosbeek v.d. Berg BV from Lottum for the rose Heidetraum in a fine quality. A well structured plant with sufficient buds, wonderfully flowering and nice clean leaves. These points resulted in a score of 9.5, which was not enough to beat the rose 'Peach Clementine'by Rosen Tantau from Uetersen, Germany. The roses were grown in a large pot and offered a rich flowering look in striking colour. Not only the number of flowers, but the total quality of leaf and flower were of great beauty. Besides the number of flowers, also sufficient buds were present to lengthen the flowering period. A fine achievement which gained 9.6 points and the first prize. The prize giving ceremony took place during the Symposium at Rozenhof in Lottum.
