Gardens Appeltern decor for splendid Lathyrus show

11-07-2011

The last three years the Lathyrus show took place in the glasshouses of Soestdijk Palace. This year the honour was for the Gardens of Appeltern. In these model gardens this year 'garden happiness' is the theme in which the Lathyrus fits well. The Dutch Lathyrus Society was happy to present its show there and requested VKC to take up the judgements in this competition.

Although the weather conditions with the extremes of the last few weeks were not optimal, Lathyrus has recovered well. 190 entries, of which 90% were belonging to the Spencer Group, were judged by VKC.

The Cup for the three longest stems of a cultivar of the spencer Group with at least three flowers per stem was for T. van Hulten from Drunen, who scored best with the new cultivar 'Ernest William': 146 cm long.

Pots and containers showed another increase of the number of entries, even though the weather conditions were not too good. In this category with 27 entries mrs. L. Stapel from Aalsmeer showed a wonderful large hanging basket. The purple cultivar 'Bounce Navy Blue' was well teken care of, and the fact that no seed was visible and the large purple flowers and thick stems led to 9.17 points and the Cup.

In the competition latifolius the L. 'White Pearl'by C. Kohlenberg from Nieuwegein acquired 9.17 points and the Cup for beautiful abundant growth, open flowers and uniform stems.

The competition (Spencer Group) mixed was characterized by its pure flowers and long stems. Again T. van Hulten from Drunen scored high: 9.43 points and the Cup.

The AVVN Cup is awarded to the vase with the highest score, entered by a member of a Society of Allotment Gardens. For the second year this Cup was scored by Mrs. M.M. Damen-v.d. Bilt from Utrecht who is a member of Allotment Society ATV Ons Genot from Utrecht. The 'Mollie Rilstone'was good for the cup with a score of 9.13 points.

The competition with 100 judged entries was that of the Spencer Group: good quality and sturdy stems were shown. The Cup in question is the Carlee Cup, awarded to an entrant of 5 cultivars as well as a vase of mixed Lathyrus. This year T. van Hulten from Drunen became the winner of this Cup with no less than nine entries. The best Lathyrus entry by T. van Hulten was the cultivar 'Gwendoline'.

The Zilveren Kan (silver can) was for H.D.G. Regterschot with the three highest judged Spencer varieties. The pink cultivar 'Banty'also scored the highest of the show. This beautiful uniform entry with sturdy and straight stems got him the beautiful score of 9.53, which was also good for the Dr. J. Stam Cup.

The best novelty in the Spencer Group gaining the Challenge Cup Westra/Rodichem was for T. van Hulten from Drunen with his new cultivar 'Margaret Hastie'. De cultivar with white flowers with purple accents had sturdy stems, pure flowers with a nice colour accent and great flower abundance. Thus a good addition to the assortment, which scored 9.50 points and the Challenge Cup.

In the contest of the non Spencer Group except latifolius the new cultivar 'Aphrodite' stood out. The white cultivar was flowering abundantly and had nice straight stems and could thus be a good asset to the glasshouse lathyrus. The 'Aphrodite'by Kwekerij Hoogeveen from Nieuwveen scored  best with 9.45 points and thus received the Cup.

In this category also the NLV Cup was awarded to the entry with the highest average score of average of two vases (Non spencer Group) T. van Hulten from Drunen did best with 'Aphrodite' and was thus the winner of the NLV Cup.
