FloraHolland Flower Festival Noordwijk: a great success
10-08-2011

'Flowers love people' was and is a wellknown slogan. Especially when those flowers are presented in a setting like the Oude Jeroenskerk in Noordwijk. A great offer in summer flowers, bulbous crops and year round grown flowers decorate the church. Entries from regional growers, but also from other production areas in the Netherlands were to be found here. Also this year VKC was requested to perform judgings and a number of specialised committees was asked to judge the products. Uniformity of a number of flowers or stems is an important criterium, but also quality of stem and leaf plays a role in the judgment. FloraHolland donated a number of prizes. The Council of Noordwijk entered the Noordwijk Summer Flowers Prize. The prizes were divided as follows:
Flowering potplants
A small but varied number of entries was to be seen, such as a beautiful Hydrangea 'Schone Bautzerin' of De Boer Natuur BV from Someren: the plant had averagely sixteen flowering heads. It was a pity that the entry was not sufficiently in flower. The entry of three pots of Lavender by Herman van Heumen from Kerkdriel were also worth mentioning. W & A De Rijke BV from Poeldijk however has won the prize for the best pot plant during a number of years already, and also this time he entered a top product: Cyclamen Super Serie Verano. The ten small pots were of great uniformity and showed a great number of flowers and buds. Besides this the mixture was of a very divers composition and good for 9.4 points and the First Prize.
Yearround cutflowers
In this category Anthuriums, Carnations, Chrysanthemums, Astears, Eustomas, Bouvardias and Roses are judged. Mts. Borgink from Groessen entered Bouvardia 'Diamond LightPink': a fine presentation. AH v.d. Haak from Rijnsburg showed Anigozanthos flavidus (kangaroo paw), and also worth while was the entry of Floralis/JC Aarse & Zn from Honselersdijk: a vase with white Lisianthus in super quality. The single flowering Aster Linda however scored best and thus Kwekerij Zijdezicht from De Lier received the prize. A very uniform entry was shown and also the structure of the stem was perfect. The pure, clean leaf made this entry worth the score of 9.42 points and the Prize for the best yearround product.

Bulbous crops
The presented assortment was interesting and wide: Gladiolus, Dahlias, Crocosmias, Alstroemerias and many other bulbous summer crops. Always scoring high is Alstroemeria 'Siberia'by HM Tesselaar CS from Heerhugowaard. Gladiolus 'Milka' by De Ridder Bloembollenkw. from Noordwijkerhout was richly flowering on a straight spike with high quality flowers. Second became Dahlia Diana's Memory by Gebr. Durieux from Katwijk. This light pink dahlia with cream heart was of uniform height and in a good ripeness stage. 9.38 points were given. The winner became a rather new Crocosmia crocosmiiflora 'Prince of Orange'. This entry had a striking colour orange and dotted heart. Also the large crest and perfect leaf were accounted and thus with 9.40 points the entry became the best bulbous product of the show. T.J.M. Leenen was responsible for this product.

Summerflowers
Unfortunately the bad weather conditions of the last weeks influenced the quality, although a wide assortment was shown. This made the judging a hard job, as the products scored close to eachother. AH v.d. Haak from Rijnsburg showed a super entry of Anigozanthos (kangaroo paw) and JC Zonneveld from Rijnsburg impressed with his entry of Hydrangea Glowing Alps. NG Wigchert from Noordwijkerhout came first however, with a vase of mixed Delphinium of great uniformity they scored 9.44 points.
The Council of Noordwijk put the Noordwijk Summerflower Prize at the disposal of the second best summerflower of the exhibition. MJ de Jong from Roelofarendsveen was the winner of this prize with Veronica Smart Alien. This Veronica with a light pink spike with green crest on top in great uniformity scored 9.45 points.
The big winner in the summer flower competition became a firm, who also last year scored with top quality. GJA van Santen from Honselersdijk showed the pink Hydrangea macrophylla 'Verena'. The uniform flowers looked perfect above the dark green perfect leaves. A true winner in the Summerflower competition 2011 with 9.46 points and the first prize.
